Hotjar Pricing: Two Separate Products Now, and the Free Plan Captures Only 35 Sessions Per Day

Updated 30 March 2026

Observe (heatmaps + recordings) and Ask (surveys + feedback) are priced separately. At 500+ daily visitors, the free plan gives you a 7% sample. Here is what each tier captures and what you actually need to spend.

Combined Cost: What Teams Actually Pay

Most product teams need both Observe and Ask. Here is what common combinations cost and how they compare to alternatives.

Session Sampling and Data Quality

The most misunderstood aspect of Hotjar pricing is session sampling. Your plan determines how many sessions are recorded each day, not how many visitors you can have. Here is what sampling rates look like at different traffic levels.

Daily VisitorsBasic (35/day)Plus (100/day)Business (500/day)Scale (1,500/day)
10035%100%100%100%
5007%20%100%100%
1,0003.5%10%50%100%
2,5001.4%4%20%60%
5,0000.7%2%10%30%
10,0000.35%1%5%15%

Rule of thumb: You need at least 100 recorded sessions of a specific page to draw reliable qualitative conclusions. For a checkout page visited by 10% of your traffic (50 out of 500 daily visitors), the Basic plan at 35 sessions per day gives you roughly 3 to 4 checkout recordings per day. That is barely enough for pattern recognition. The Plus plan at 100 sessions per day gives you about 10 checkout recordings per day, which is workable for identifying UX issues.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does Hotjar cost per month?
Hotjar now has two separate products with independent pricing. Hotjar Observe (heatmaps, recordings, funnels) ranges from free to $213 per month. Hotjar Ask (surveys, feedback widgets) ranges from free to $159 per month. Most teams need both, bringing the combined cost to $0 to $372 per month depending on usage tier.
Is Hotjar free to use?
Yes, Hotjar offers a free Basic plan for both Observe and Ask. The Observe free plan captures 35 daily sessions with heatmaps and recordings. The Ask free plan allows 20 survey responses per month. These are real functional plans, not time-limited trials. However, the 35 daily sessions limit means sites with more than 500 daily visitors only capture a small fraction of user behavior.
What is a daily session in Hotjar?
A daily session is one unique user visit that Hotjar records on a given day. If your site gets 1,000 visitors per day and your plan allows 35 daily sessions, Hotjar records only 35 of those 1,000 visits (3.5% sampling rate). The sessions are randomly selected. Page views within a single session all count as one session.
Is Microsoft Clarity a free alternative to Hotjar?
Microsoft Clarity provides free unlimited heatmaps and session recordings with no session caps. It also includes click tracking, rage click detection, and scroll maps. Clarity lacks surveys, feedback widgets, and funnels that Hotjar provides. For basic heatmaps and session recordings, Clarity is a legitimate free alternative. For surveys and user feedback, you still need Hotjar Ask or a competitor.
How does Hotjar compare to FullStory?
Hotjar is simpler and cheaper, focused on qualitative insights (heatmaps, recordings, surveys). FullStory is more powerful and expensive ($199 to $849+ per month), focused on quantitative behavior analytics (full session capture, frustration detection, search, funnels). Hotjar samples sessions. FullStory captures all sessions on paid plans. Choose Hotjar for quick qualitative insights. Choose FullStory for deep product analytics.
Does Hotjar slow down your website?
Hotjar adds approximately 40 to 80 milliseconds to page load time. The tracking script is loaded asynchronously, so it does not block page rendering. For most websites, the impact is negligible. However, for sites where every millisecond of Core Web Vitals matters (highly competitive SEO niches), the added script weight is worth considering.
How long does Hotjar retain data?
All Hotjar plans retain data for 365 days. This applies to both Observe (recordings, heatmaps) and Ask (survey responses, feedback). After 365 days, data is automatically deleted. There is no option to extend retention, even on the Scale plan.
Does Hotjar work with single-page applications?
Yes. Hotjar supports single-page applications built with React, Vue, Angular, and other frameworks. You may need to configure virtual page view tracking to ensure heatmaps and recordings correctly capture navigation between routes. Hotjar provides documentation for SPA setup with each major framework.
